Umrah, also known as the lesser pilgrimage, is a sacred journey that Muslims undertake to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. It has its own set of rules and regulations that pilgrims must follow. Here are some of the key rules and regulations for performing Umrah:
Ihram: Before entering the holy city of Mecca, pilgrims must enter a state of consecration called "Ihram." Tawaf: Upon arrival in Mecca, pilgrims must perform the Tawaf, which involves circumambulating the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction while reciting prayers and supplications.
Sa'i: After Tawaf, pilgrims perform Sa'i, which involves walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating the actions of Hagar (Hajira), the wife of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), in search of water.
Trimming or Shaving the Hair: After completing Sa'i, male pilgrims are required to either shave their heads or trim their hair, symbolizing humility and purification. Female pilgrims should trim a small portion of their hair.
Tahallul: After the completion of Umrah, pilgrims are to exit the state of Ihram by performing Tahallul. This involves changing out of the Ihram clothing and resuming normal activities that were restricted during Ihram.
Tawaf al-Qudum: If you are performing Umrah as part of your Hajj pilgrimage (known as Hajj al-Qiran or Hajj al-Tamattu), you may need to perform a second Tawaf called Tawaf al-Qudum upon arriving in Mecca.
Respect for the Holy Sites: Pilgrims must show utmost respect and reverence for all the holy sites in Mecca, including the Kaaba, Masjid al-Haram, Safa and Marwah, and the Zamzam Well.
Dress Code: Pilgrims are required to dress modestly, covering their bodies appropriately. Women should cover their hair and wear loose-fitting clothing that conceals their body.
Behavior and Etiquette: Pilgrims are expected to maintain good behavior, patience, and humility during their Umrah journey. They should avoid arguing, fighting, or engaging in any negative behavior.
Health Precautions: Pilgrims should take necessary health precautions, including vaccinations, to protect themselves and others from diseases.
Timing: Umrah can be performed at any time of the year except during the Hajj season. However, the month of Ramadan is considered a highly blessed time for Umrah.
Visa and Documentation: Pilgrims must obtain the necessary Umrah visa and travel documentation before embarking on their journey to Saudi Arabia.
